The Dangers of College Drug and Alcohol Abuse

College Drug and Alcohol Abuse

Going off to college is an exciting expedition. For many, it’s their first taste of true liberty, allowing for all sorts of fun misadventures and new experiences; meeting great people and exploring new places along the way. But there’s a darker side to this newfound freedom and experimentation, one that’s all too capable of stunting your personal growth and thwarting your academic opportunities; say hello to college drug and alcohol abuse. Today we’ll be exploring the dangers of the drug and alcohol scene in college, and why you should avoid its tempting siren song.

Troubling Statistics

Peer pressure, academic stress, sorority and fraternity environments, and a generally flourishing party scene all contribute to a heightened likelihood of drug and alcohol abuse in college. According to surveys conducted by the Addiction Center, the statistics are staggering. An estimated 80% of college students report having abused drugs or alcohol, with 31% reporting symptoms and disruptions caused by the abuse.

The abuse of prescription drugs skyrocketed by 450% between 1993 and 2005, and has only increased since then. Tests and deadlines require focus, efficiency, and concentration, making the abuse and illegal distribution of prescription drugs like Adderall commonplace in the college environment, while medications like Xanax and Valium are abused for their tranquilizing and relaxing effects.

The Sobering Consequences of College Drug and Alcohol Abuse, Legal and Otherwise

The consequences of drug and alcohol abuse in college range from benign to devastating. Many students report disruptions in academic and extracurricular performance, while some experience a tragic and total derailing of their college careers. If these were the only aftereffects of the college party scene, it would be bad enough; but there can be serious legal consequences as well.

According to the Addiction Center, “An estimated 110,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are arrested every year for an alcohol-related violation such as public drunkenness or driving under the influence.” Convictions of public drunkenness can result in brief stints of jail time and community service, but the consequences of driving under the influence are far more severe, often including hefty fines, drivers licence revocation and even jail time. Legal fees for navigating the aftermath of driving under the influence are extreme as well, and can cost up to $10,000 for even a first time offender.
